Le Havre is a dynamic port city on the Normandy coast, just two hours from Paris. With around 170,000 inhabitants, it is the second-largest city in Normandy and a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its post-war modernist architecture designed by Auguste Perret.
The city offers an exceptional quality of life, combining the energy of an industrial hub with the calm of the seaside. It is known for its affordable cost of living, cultural vibrancy, and openness to the world. Around 13,000 students, including more than 1,500 international students, study each year at Université Le Havre Normandie, creating a friendly and diverse community.
Le Havre is also a city of art and culture – home to the MuMa (Museum of Modern Art André Malraux), music venues, theatres, and numerous festivals. Students enjoy the seaside promenade, cafés, and sports facilities along the beach, which is just a short walk from campus.
The University of Le Havre Normandie works closely with CROUS Normandie, which manages student residences near campus and the city centrer.
Students staying for at least three months can apply for housing benefits on the CAF website.
For non-EU students holding a “student – mobility programme” residence permit issued by the first host country of the RESCO programme, the French institution will proceed with a notification of your mobility to the French immigration authorities. You do not need to apply for a new visa, but you must:
be enrolled in a recognised mobility programme (such as Erasmus Mundus) and accepted by the French host institution.
For EU/EEA students, no visa is required. Registration with local authorities may be needed if your stay exceeds 90 days.
Le Havre is easily accessible from Paris and major European cities.
Regular SNCF trains connect Paris Saint-Lazare and Le Havre (around 2h15).
The nearest international airports are Paris Charles de Gaulle and Paris Orly, both connected to Le Havre by direct train.
Le Havre is also accessible by ferry from Portsmouth (UK) with Brittany Ferries. The ferry terminal is only a 10-minute drive or bus ride from the university campus.
The LiA network operates trams and buses across the city. A monthly student pass costs around €20.
Université Le Havre Normandie offers a welcoming and vibrant campus environment with a strong international community. The Maison de l’Étudiant (Student Life Centre) hosts concerts, exhibitions, debates, and student-led cultural events throughout the year.
More than 30 student associations are active across the university, covering sports, culture, environment, and social initiatives. The Erasmus Student Network (ESN Le Havre) regularly organises city tours, intercultural evenings, and excursions in Normandy.
Sports lovers can join the SUAPS (University Sports Service), offering over 40 activities including football, sailing, yoga, climbing, and swimming at low cost.
All students must have valid health insurance while studying in France.
Students must also take out housing insurance, required by French law for renting accommodation.
Free health and psychological services are available through the Service de Santé Universitaire (SSU).
