The cities of Braga and Guimarães

The University of Minho operates in two of Portugal’s most dynamic cities, Braga and Guimarães, located in the country’s beautiful north-west.

Braga, one of the oldest cities in Portugal, is known for its youthful spirit, vibrant student life, and mix of historic and modern architecture.
Guimarães, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is often called the “birthplace of Portugal” and offers a unique blend of medieval charm and innovation.

Both cities are affordable, safe, and welcoming, offering a genuine Portuguese lifestyle in a friendly academic environment.

Housing

UMinho provides accommodation through its University Residences (SASUM), which offer around 1,400 rooms:

  • Single room: €120/month
  • Double room: €90/month per person
All rooms include furniture, Wi-Fi, and access to common kitchens and study areas.

Students preferring private rentals can find rooms for €100–150/month, or apartments for €350–400/month in Braga or Guimarães.

Visa and Arrival

For non-EU students: the “Student – Mobility Programme Visa” issued by the first host country (Hungary) under EU Directive 2016/801 remains valid for the full duration of the RESCO Master.
This visa allows you to live and study in Portugal without applying for a new visa. Upon arrival, the University of Minho will notify the Portuguese immigration authorities (Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras – SEF) of your mobility. No additional visa application is required.

EU/EEA students: you do not need a visa to study in Portugal. However, if staying for more than 90 days, they must register locally with the municipality (Certificado de Registo de Cidadão da União Europeia)
