The University of Minho operates in two of Portugal’s most dynamic cities, Braga and Guimarães, located in the country’s beautiful north-west.
Braga, one of the oldest cities in Portugal, is known for its youthful spirit, vibrant student life, and mix of historic and modern architecture.
Guimarães, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is often called the “birthplace of Portugal” and offers a unique blend of medieval charm and innovation.
Both cities are affordable, safe, and welcoming, offering a genuine Portuguese lifestyle in a friendly academic environment.
UMinho provides accommodation through its University Residences (SASUM), which offer around 1,400 rooms:
Students preferring private rentals can find rooms for €100–150/month, or apartments for €350–400/month in Braga or Guimarães.
For non-EU students: the “Student – Mobility Programme Visa” issued by the first host country (Hungary) under EU Directive 2016/801 remains valid for the full duration of the RESCO Master.
This visa allows you to live and study in Portugal without applying for a new visa. Upon arrival, the University of Minho will notify the Portuguese immigration authorities (Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras – SEF) of your mobility. No additional visa application is required.
EU/EEA students: you do not need a visa to study in Portugal. However, if staying for more than 90 days, they must register locally with the municipality (Certificado de Registo de Cidadão da União Europeia)
The nearest airport is Porto International Airport (Francisco Sá Carneiro – OPO), located 50 km from Braga and Guimarães.
From the airport:
Both campuses are easily reachable by public transport or on foot from the city centre.
UMinho provides comprehensive student support through medical, psychological, and social services available on campus.
UMinho’s International Student Support Desk helps with all administrative matters: registration, residence permits, health insurance, and housing.
